MAROC CHALLENGE 2013 DEPARTS JAVEA BOUND FOR NORTH AFRICA
The racers of the budget rally meet in Jávea before departure for Morocco
The participants in the 2013 edition of the MAROC CHALLENGE are making final preparations for their departure from Jávea bound for Almeria and Morocco beyond. On Saturday 30th November the teams, who will have gathered with their cars alongside Avenida de la Libertad in the Arenal the day before, will begin their adventure, driving south to catch a ferry across the Alboran Sea to Nador on the coast of North Africa and head into the Sahara desert destined to arrive in Erg-Chebbi on Friday 6th December.
The event brings together teams from Spain, Italy, France, Denmark, Ukraine and Portugal. There will be 24 hours of cohabitation in which they will be able to see how well their competitors have prepared their cars for the challenge before sharing a themed departure night at Socco Lounge Bar. Promoter Rui Cabaço said that there will also be an exhibition of cars outside the venue and a selection of photos and videos from previous editions will be screened inside.
Residents in Jávea will be able to emerge themselves into the atmosphere of this special rally throughout the week prior to departure of Saturday 30th November when a custom car will visit different parts of the municipality and the organisers have invited everyone to come and see the cars for themselves in the Arenal area, vehicles that have been adapted to carry their occupants over a distance of some 2,000 kilometres across roads, tracks and African desert.
A condition of competing in this budget rally is to use vehicles that are at least 16 years old so participants will be driving old all-terrain vehicles or those which have been customised to take part. The event has been specifically designed for enthusiasts with few resources and without sponsorship to support them so that they can experience a great adventure and feel the same sensation as those who take part in the famous Dakar Rally or PanAfrica Challenge. Another essential part of the Maroc Challenge is its solidarity as participants will be carrying school supplies, clothes and toys to hand out in the desert towns through which the rally will pass.
The challenge has the support of the Departments of Tourism and Sports which see the promotional value of the event as well as the sporting side. Councillor Antonio Miragall (Tourism) said that the last two editions of the Maroc Challenge have been held in low season which has provided an incentive to visit Jávea at a time outside of summer and consequently spread tourism throughout the year. Councillor Juan Luis Cardona (Sports) said that the growth in interest in the event since its inception four years ago has been strong, rising from 36 teams in the first edition to 117 teams which will be entering this year and it has become one of the most important 4x4 events around today.
