- WHY THE CHOICE OF WINDOW FRAME IS SO IMPORTANT
If you are thinking of replacing your windows and doors there are some things you should be aware of. In Spain, as you can probably imagine, the building codes are not particularly stringent, which means that you might replace your existing windows with a sub standard product. Don’t!
Here at SAFESTYLESPAIN we supply top quality German UPVC windows and doors using the internationally recognised Aluplast and Winkhaus systems. We not only guarantee our windows and doors for 10 years, but we also guarantee to better any like for like quote!
Double glazing explained: Double glazing is a way of creating an insulating layer of air or special gas between two panes of glass. It lets in as much sunlight as single-glazed windows, but holds the heat in much better.
A well designed double-glazed window with a UPVC frame can:
- Halve the heat loss through the window
- Reduce external noise
- Reduce condensation.
Why our double-glazing is better than others: For the best performance, you should look for the following things:
- Frames that are thermally broken, or made from an insulating material such as UPVC. These will perform better thermally than windows with standard aluminium frames. We can reduce window heat loss by between 20% (Aluminium frame with a “Thermal Break”) and 40% (UPVC frames), compared with double-glazing fitted into standard aluminum frames.
- Low-emission (low-e) glass. This allows light and heat in, but reflects escaping heat back into the room. We can supply Low-e glass which cuts window heat loss by about 20% to 30%, compared with double-glazing without low-e.
- Multiple layers of good seals to keep draughts, moisture and noise out. We ensure that the joints between the glazing unit and the frame are always well-sealed.
The difference between Aluminum and UPVC: Since aluminum is a metal, it transfers heat much more easily than a UPVC frame. This is bad news for energy savings because the more easily heat can pass through the frame, the sooner heat trapped inside the room will escape, or in summer the heat from outdoors will leak in, thus making it more difficult to maintain the temperature inside the building. Although we can supply both types we recommend UPVC because a well-sealed reinforced UPVC frame is better at moderating temperature exchange and preventing heat losses (see graph). And as reported by the British Plastics Federation, the life expectancy of a UPVC window is over 40 years.
