RESIDENTS VOTE FOR PROJECTS TO BE FUNDED FROM 2014 MUNICIPAL BUDGET
A new climbing wall, improvements to the ruirau and resurfacing of Avenida Juan Carlos come out top
Since 2011, residents in Jávea have been able to have a say in nominating projects into which a portion of the annual municipal budget can be invested and through this initiative, launched by the current administration, Jávea has benefited from a new bus station as well as new public padel courts and the forthcoming renovation of the Central Cinema in the heart of the historic centre. On the evening of Wednesday 6th November, residents packed into the auditorium of the Casa del Cultura to consider and vote on 21 projects which had reached the final phase of deliberation for investment during 2014 and produced a provisional list in which a new rock-climbing wall came out on top followed by improvements to the historic Riurau d'Arnauda in Parque Montaner and the re-surfacing of the Avenida Juan Carlos I between the town and the port.
Mayor José Chulvi and councillors Cesc Camprubi (Citizen Participation) and Óscar Antón (Finance) opened the meeting with an appraisal of the nomination procedure in which a special working group sifted through more than 120 proposals received from residents during the consultation process. Camprubi explained that some projects had to be discarded because of high cost or due to responsibility falling on a different administration; these included a municipal swimming pool and the illumination of a section of the Carretera Cabo de la Nao, the responsibility of which belongs to the 'Diputación de Alicante'. With regards to the later, it was explained that the request would be passed to the provincial governement for consideration.
After the speeches, the voting began and residents were asked to rank the 21 projects which had made the final cut from their most favourite to their least favourite with the following attracting the most support:
1. Creation of a new climbing wall on the side of the Trinquet de Xàbia in Frechinal - Value: 31,000 euros
2. Complete the roof and install lighting to enhance the Riurau d'Arnauda in Parque Montaner - 85,000 euros
3. Re-surfacing of Avenida Juan Carlos I between the town and the port to resolve problems caused by constant re-painting of lines - 55,000 euros
4. Installation of anti-jellyfish nets to protect the Playa del Arenal - 45,000 euros
5. Installation of a Futbol-7 football pitch in the Arenal area - 150,000 euros
6. Retrofitting on 27 routes used by the Climbing School of Ambolo and Santa Lucía - 5,120 euros
7. Conversion of one of the iconic windmills into a museum with grinding stone - 170,000 euros
8. Creation of the multipurpose area for youth in the Arenal with table tennis and table football facilities - 8,000 euros *
* Although the available budget for projects in 2014 would be exhausted by the first seven projects, the multipurpose area in the Arenal would be considered if the windmill museum project is not ultimately carried out or there is sufficient budget remaining after completion.
