TRADITIONAL WELCOME FOR SIX NEW MUSICIANS JOINING THE CENTRO ARTÍSTICO MUSICAL DE XÀBIA
A special concert honouring Santa Cecilia will review the best soundtracks in film history
The excellent Centro Artístico Musical de Xàbia association has revealed its plans to honour Santa Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, with a number of performances over the next week. And as is traditional as this time of year, the association will welcome its muse Nuria Roselló Ramírez and the band will welcome six new young musicians to its ranks who will be collected in a special parade on Saturday afternoon to participate in a special mass dedicated to the saint. The festivities continue with a performance by young musicians on Sunday followed by a spectacular special concert on Friday 29th November which will feature a repertoire of the best film soundtracks.
The six new musicians joining the band are Miguel G. García Bisquert and Joana Albi Puig on clarinet, Inés Angosto Cortés on flute, María Ramis Cabo and Raúl Silvestre Cantó on horn and Luís García Bas on trumpet.
On Sunday 24th November at 12.30pm in the Plaça del Baix in the heart of the old town, young musicians from the association will give a special concert in honour of Santa Cecilia before the special event of the celebrations which will take place on Friday 29th November at 10.00pm inside the ancient fortress church of San Bartolomé, a repertoire of film music through history entitled "De Chaplin al Segle XXI" - 'From Chaplin to the 21st Century' - which the association hopes will attract not only music lovers but also those who enjoy the silver screen. The concert will feature some of the best film soundtracks composed by great composers like John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park), James Horner (Titanic, Aliens, Braveheart, Avatar) and Ennio Morricone (The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, The Untouchables, Once Upon a Time in America) amongst others. The concert will also include compositions from musicals such as Grease and West Side Story. Admission will be FREE and as always the conductor of the performance will be Juan Francisco Sanjuan Rodrigo.
Who is Santa Cecilia?
For over 440 years, festivals of music have been held in honor of Santa Cecilia and the Rome's Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (National Academy of Santa Cecilia), founded in 1585, is one of the oldest musical institutions in the world, producing the likes of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Ennio Morricone. Cecilia lived in the 2nd Century C.E. and was long supposed to have been a noble lady of Rome who suffered martyrdom in around 176 - 180 C.E. under Emperor Marcus Aureluis. Having been brought up as a Christian, Cecilia prayed for her virginity and on her wedding night to Valerian, she confessed that she had a guardian angel watching over her who would kill Valerian if he touched her in either love or lust. Somewhat suspicious, Valerian demand to see this angel but Cecilia said that he would only do so if he was baptised by an old man named Urban (who would later become Pope Urban I). Having been baptised, along with his brother Tiburce, Valerian was visited by the angel. The brothers were arrested and questioned by prefect Turcius Almachius and when they refused to bow to Jove, the supreme god of the Romans, they were beheaded. Cecilia was also called upon to recant her Christian faith but refused and was ordered to be burnt to death in a bath of flame. However, she sat in the bath for a day without breaking sweat and an executioner struck her three times on the neck. Her wounds bound, Cecilia lived on for three days and asked the pope to concert her house into a church. The 5th century church of Santa Cecilia in the Travestere sector of Rome is supposedly built on the site of her house; her remains were interred there in the 9th century C.E. and when the church was rebuilt in 1599, her body was discovered incorrupt.. Her feast day is November 22nd and she is the patron saint of musicians and church music. She is often depicted playing a viola, a small organ or another music instrument. Saint Cecilia has become a symbol of the conviction that good music in an integral part of liturgy, of greater value to the church than any other art.
